Iran’s Ardabil-Miyaneh Railway Connectivity With Azerbaijan To Be Completed By Q1 2023

by

The largest rail project in Iran is the Ardabil-Miyaneh railway, which connects the city of Ardabil, in Iran’s Ardabil Province to the city of Miyaneh in East Azerbaijan Province. From Miyaneh, rail connects with the Azerbaijan national railway, thus completing an integral part of the wider INSTC network from the Caspian Sea.

Kheirollah Khademi, the Iranian Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development, and CEO of Construction and Development of Transportation Infrastructure Company (CDTIC), said that the 175km railway line is planned to be put into use by the end of the current Iranian year (March 20, 2023).

28 km long tunnels are located on this railway line. The country’s longest tunnel, 4.2 km long, is along this route. The Ardabil-Miyaneh railway is one of the most complex railway projects in Iran and is being built by the private sector. Within the framework of this project, 11 contractors and 7 consulting companies are cooperating. Freight trains along the route will travel at 120 kilometers per hour, and the passenger trains at 160 kilometers per hour. It is estimated that 2.5 million tons of cargo and 600,000 passengers will be transported annually from the first year, rising to 4 million tons of cargo and 1.5 million passengers a year.

The new route creates a road traffic-free rail transportation system, and expands Iran’s high speed rail network for the development of Ardabil province in different sectors, especially transporting raw materials from ports and customs inside the province
